Elliot House

Elliot, originally uploaded by osborne villas.

I promised myself I’d try and blog more often, so the very small number of people who follow me, have something to follow. I’d also promisd myself I’d write about stuff that mattered a bit, and not just post flickr stuff all the time, which is a cop out. fail on all fronts, I think this is because I’m a visual person. i have this friend Martin, he’s a poet, a proper published one with books and that, I like poetry and words and reading and that, but what I’ve realised whilst talking to Martin is that when he listens to music he likes the words, which is why he likes people like Randy Newman, whereas I’m just as likely to listen to Mogwai which has no words or some random drum and bass which has samples from a gangster film in it or some weird old 80s new wave stuff which is shouty. the conclusion I came to was that, i like a whole sound, rather than bits of a sound, or the words behind it. I think I’m a bit like that with what I do, which is design and what my hobbies are (for there are many) most of which involve taking something and processing it in some way to make it look a bit like how I want it to be. sometimes I see the words, sometimes I don’t.

anyway I wrote all that and didn’t mention the photo above once, which is Elliot House in Norwich, which I’m quite pleased with.

Great photo – shows that modern design is just as imposing and interesting as the old stuff.

Words vs. music – reminds me a bit of the figurative vs. abstract debate in painting. I iike both but am less impressed with the fusion (the kind of semi abstract that is popular now; and mixed media that is often the choice of those who can’t actually paint)

Must get over to Norwich soon.

I am completely kinaesthetic -so I don’t hear the words – I just like how it makes me feel – especially if it results in me jumping up and down. I do just feel my way around the world…

I sort of like some modern art, but I do see a lot of it as just a way of getting round having any talent, it seems to not be a requirement to be able to draw to be an artist these days, I’m old fashioned, I think if you can’t draw, then you can’t really be deemed as such. The same reason I wouldn’t ever call myself a musician, I can just about play various things, I do it for my own entertainment, and sometimes to get a room to myself. I’ve dabbled with loads of stuff, but I think my understanding of the theory behind it makes my experience at playing shallower than many. Having said that my electronica phase produced some nice stuff (well i think so) here http://www.last.fm/music/Typejunky if you want a listen. beware there’s one really quite unpleasant track in a weird time code. Anyhow, i cut my finger so badly the other night I can’t play banjo at all at the moment… boo hiss. *sighs of relief from collective family*
